CEO: Everyone wants to return to Camp Nou, but not without enough spectators
Recently, Barcelona's new CEO Manel Del Rio was interviewed by RAC1. As the former financial director, he shared his views on the return to the new Camp Nou, the budget situation and the club's future plans in strategic areas.
Regarding the issue of returning to Camp Nou, Del Rio made it clear: "This is more of a social issue than an economic issue. The club will not return without enough spectators. Everyone wants to return to the new Camp Nou to watch games, but the capacity of 27,000 people is unsustainable." He emphasized that this decision will depend on actual feasibility and licensing conditions, rather than by him personally or a specific date.
When asked whether he must return before the end of the year, Del Rio responded that the main stipulation in the contract is that the club should continue to operate the game revenue according to the current model, and pointed out that investors are satisfied with the progress of the project.
When it comes to the losses in the last fiscal year, Del Rio is not worried and believes that this is only a temporary phenomenon. He said the club knew how to select partners and reallocate resources to adapt to new football consumption patterns.
He also emphasized that consolidating regular revenue sources is the top priority: "What affects the club's economy is daily operations, and non-conventional revenues like stadiums, museums and sponsors need to be stabilized to ensure a long-term economic foundation." In addition, he affirmed the value of the "Barcelona Vision" plan and believes that these projects will continue to create value.
For VIP seat sales, the revenue was initially expected to be 100 million euros, but 70 million euros have been actually received, and the remaining 30 million euros will be paid later. Del Rio explained that while this revenue is not included in the budget, it will gradually become recurring revenue.
Talking about the budget of more than 1 billion euros, Del Rio explained that this is due to the club operating two stadiums at the same time and other related costs. He is convinced that those costs will be reduced with the return to Camp Nou.
Regarding the rumors of selling Barcelona Licensing and Merchandise (BLM), Del Rio firmly denied it and said that the club is considering improving logistics efficiency and e-commerce. Finally, he has full confidence in the new Camp Nou, believing that it will be the key to restoring economic normalcy.
