Smart said: "Redick's basketball IQ and game reading ability have not received enough praise. He has shown an extremely high level both as a player and a coach."

Last season, Smart only played 34 games in total, including 19 games for the Grizzlies, averaging 8.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.2 breaks; he played 15 games for the Wizards, averaging 9.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 breaks.
