Szczesny: Yamal will become the best in the world if he continues his momentum and is willing to pass on his experience to newcomers
In your career, you have worked with legends such as Cech and Buffon. Things, what did you learn from them?
I think if you have a little bit of a brain and you train with the best, you want to learn those little details. If you like something about a goalkeeper, you try to imitate it, and maybe you don't like it, and I think everyone has to find it. Your own playing style and balance. You can't try to be Buffon, Cech or Dib Martinez, but you can learn a little bit from each one and find your own way. I saw Jens Lehmann when he was Arsenal's goalkeeper and I watched him play and train and tried to imitate him exactly, but it didn't work for me. So you have to find your own way and become your own player.
Are you trying to do to Joan what Buffon did to you?
A bit, yes. I think after having that experience of having someone who was the best role model for me, I felt like I had an obligation to do the same for Joan. He may not have learned as much from me as I did from Buffon, but The process is very similar.
You have signed a contract until 2027, but there is an option to leave the team next summer. Will you fulfill the contract?
I don't know. I think the way the contract is structured, we both have options; it also depends on how I feel physically. As you know, I retired and had no intention of playing football again. I also wondered what it would be like to be the second goalkeeper, I had never done that in my life. So far I don't have any frustrations, just positive emotions. When we were drafting the contract, I didn't want to be in a position where I signed a two-year backup contract and then said, "I don't like it" one month later. So we haven’t thought about it that much yet. We will work hard to have a successful season and wait until the end of the season. Come down and decide what to do.
Your documentary was recently released, if your career continues, will there be a second one?
The original intention of making this film was to announce my retirement from football, because when we started filming, I originally wanted to retire in the summer of 2025. Later, Juventus and Barcelona's plans changed everything. So the plans for the movie have also changed, but like I said, I'm not making any plans right now. In my case, whatever I planned was useless because I could retire and come back three months later. So you can't believe what I say.
In the remaining contract period, how do you want your career documentary to end?
I think I Enough has been done and my documentary can end there. I didn’t feel the need to write a new chapter for the movie. The movie wasn't just about my side as a footballer because I felt like that wasn't the most important role in my life. I love my job and am proud of my achievements, but I am also a father, husband and son. I try to open up my mind on these topics and let people discover another side of the game. To all the fans, we are just the names behind the jerseys. I hope people see this movie and understand that there's more to us than just a football player making a lot of money and having a happy life. Life is not that simple.
One of your best friends in the locker room is Lay Thousands. His contract with Barcelona expires at the end of this season. Have you talked to him about future plans?
I think when talking about players over 35, you need to look at it year by year. You never know when you won’t be able to compete at the highest level anymore. Lewandowski has proven over the past few years that he can still score a lot of goals and he can be a very important player for Barcelona. So we wait and see. I think it depends on how the season goes and how he feels physically and mentally, but I never doubt that a 37- or 45-year-old Lewandowski can still score goals. I trust him to make an honest decision based on how he feels. Lewandowski and I played together for 16 years and one day we had to separate. me I never thought about what I would do after Barcelona. Of course, I didn’t plan to come to Barcelona. So, don't trust my plan.
He has also played more of a substitute role this year. Do you think he can also play an important role as a substitute?
Yes. I think Lewandowski also knows that physically he cannot play the full 90 minutes every few days like he did a few years ago. He is 37 years old and there are always limits. People have doubted Lewandowski many times over the years and he has always proved them wrong. I'm sure at the end of the season you will see Lewandowski scoring a lot of goals. I don't think he would mind if some of those were scored from the bench. His obsession is scoring goals and he will do whatever it takes to help the team by scoring goals .
Last year you celebrated the Triple Crown grandly and even smoked cigars, but you still lacked a Champions League. How will you celebrate your Champions League win?
Oh, you don’t want to know! (Laughs) Let’s talk about it then. I hope we get a chance because that means we're going to have a fantastic season this year. It's always been a dream and I've never been this close to it. We were very close last year. This is a dream, not an obsession. It would be great to finish my career by winning the most important trophy in Europe. If I win, I promised some of the lads in the team that I would give an interview in Catalan. I've been learning swear words, so you don't want to know that yet.
