Sergio Campana, former president of the Italian Players Association, died at the age of 91
Former Italian Players Association President Sergio Campana died at the age of 91. He led the Italian Players Association for 43 years (from 1968 to 2011).
Campana died on the evening of July 19 in his hometown of Barsano del Grapa.
Campana played for Bologna and Vicenza Ranerosi (both competed in Serie A) during his football career, and was also a well-known lawyer who has been registered since 1967. Since ending his player career with boots that year, he has devoted himself to the cause of protecting the rights and interests of players with great enthusiasm. In 1968, he and Mazzola Rivera co-founded the Italian Players Association.
In 1974, thanks to Campana's efforts for the players, the first historic strike took place in Italian football. In order to support Augusto Scala, a former player who refused to transfer from Bologna to Avellino and faced punishment for the club, the players started the game after a scheduled kickoff time of 10 minutes.
